Nourishing Hand Salve

Why I really need a heavy-duty nourishing hand salve:

It gets very dry where we live during the winter. The summer isn't exactly humid either… Jerusalem in on a mountain at the edge of a desert.

I'm a mom: I wash my hands a lot since Kids eat all the time! They also need their nose wiped and diapers changed often. Needless to say, I wash my hands before preparing food and after wiping. That could be once or twice an hour.

During the winters fingers begin to crack and my knuckles look like I was in a fistfight.

But not this winter!

This winter I got a great recipe for a rich nourishing hand salve from Michal Levin, an educator, and producer of natural remedies. I changed it up a bit to tailor to my needs and likes, and I encourage you to do the same. It is a small batch recipe so you can try things out. Changing the essential oils, the carrier oils, etc. This also makes a great gift for the holidays.

How does it work?

This save has very rich and nourishing ingredients:

Shea Butter: A hypoallergenic butter, extracted from the nut of the African Shea tree, that has unparalleled skin-nourishing properties. It provides the skin with essential fatty acids necessary for collagen production.

Sweet Almond Oil: A hypoallergenic light oil, easily absorbed by the skin and safe for sensitive skin. Rich in antioxidants and vitamin A, it facilitates the healing of cracked and dry skin.

Jojoba Oil: A liquid wax produced from the seed of the jojoba shrub. Jojoba oil is an emollient- moisturizes and prevents scaly rough parts.

Vitamin E: A thick liquid that mixes with oil. Enhances tissue fusion, the healing of scars and assists stretch mark prevention.

Lavender Essential Oil: Encourages skin healing, and cell regeneration.

Geranium, Rose and Patchouli Essential Oil: In her book A home and Health Care Guide To Aromatherapy and Essential Oils, Valerie Ann Worwood lists these as a remedy for dry hands.

Nourishing Hand Salve:

  • 1 tbsp Shea butter

  • 1 tbsp almond oil

  • 1 tsp jojoba oil

  • 10 drops vitamin E

  • 5 drops lavender essential oil

  • 3 drops geranium essential oil

  • 3 drops rose essential oil

  • 2 drops patchouli essential oil

Blend all the ingredients together using a blend stick and store.

To use: Apply to hands before you go to sleep. For enhanced results cover your hands with wool gloves and sleep with them.
